General Doug Haig thought allied forces could break through the German Line there because a majority of Germans were focused in Southern France near Verdun.
Allied artillery bombed the German Line and British and Canadian troops had to move across "no man's land". The Newfoundland Regiment was attacked and brutally massacred by the Germans, 730 were killed, wounded, or in critical condition.

Both British and French forces tried two times by early 1917 to take a German Stronghold that was located on ???? ?????. The height was a large advantage for Germans. Allies went to the Canadians and for the first time ever in that war, all four of Canada's divisions were designed to fight single units.
Canadian troops had to change up their methods and tactics. This was made clear because of the massacre at the Somme. Detailed plans were created and the plan that was used was called the "Creeping Barrage" and involved artillery bombing No Man's Land and military creeping behind the barrage of artillery allowing them to move close to the enemy and attack.
The win at ???? ????? Generated a lot of nationalistic pride in Canadians and made them feel more Canadian. Becuase of this, after the war, Canada was able to cut more ties with Britain, another step closer to independence.
