Are you avoiding maltodextrin (corn) in your babies formula?
maltodextrin-header

The best organic baby formula that comes from Europe uses one of two different carbohydrates in their ingredients: lactose and maltodextrin. Both are sourced from organic farming. One comes from milk and one comes from plants. One is more controversial than others.

Maltodextrin is derived from plants such as corn, rice, or potatoes. It is a starch derived from these foods. When it is broken down further through a hydrolyzing process, it is a complex carbohydrate that gives energy and thickens foods. Maltodextrin is made up of small-chain molecules that are easy to digest. Even though it is a carbohydrate, it is essentially tasteless.

Holle and Lebenswert are two organic baby formula companies that use organic maltodextrin in their formulas. One of the good reasons to use maltodextrin when using a sugar carbohydrate (such as lactose) is to balance the sweetness. Lactose is naturally sweet and comes from milk. It is the main carbohydrate found in breast milk. Baby formula companies such as Holle and Lebenswert found a way to use maltodextrin with the Demeter-quality milk without making it too sweet. The balance of the milk and maltodextrin delicious but not overly sweet.

Maltodextrin provides balance of sweetness, energy, and thickness in baby formula such as Holle and Lebenswert. Its slow-release energy means that babies are satisfied for longer periods of time. The amount of maltodextrin used in baby formula is small enough to be beneficial to your baby's nutritional needs. There is no other carbohydrate that shares the same components of maltodextrin.

Are you avoiding soy in your babies formula? (All European formulas are GMO free soy)

SoyLecithin_Header

Some European baby formulas only use soy oil.  They are substituting any major ingredients for soy like you'll in American formulas.  Soy can be used as a emulsifier (helps two liquids mix easier) or a essential fat.

Is a box in English important or are you comfortable translating directions?

The majority of our formulas are in English.  Formulas such as HiPP are made/designed for different countries and therefore the boxes will be the lanuage of which they are designed.  Holle has boxes in both English & German, there are some very mild differences between the two but they are very closely related.  Your choices will be limited a little further if you are only comfortable with English boxes.

Does your baby seem excessively hungry?

Young babies & pre-term babies should be fed on demand, which can mean every hour.. If your baby is demanding bottles every hour at 6 months of age, then this would be considered excessively hungry.  Your baby should be satisfied after a bottle for at least 2-3 hours.  Some babies can sleep thorough the night as early as 4 months old, others it may be 8-12 months of age.

Do you have a preference over Goat's Milk or Cow's Milk?

maxresdefault
Goat Milk is more expensive then Cow's Milk, however there are benefits:

#1: Nutritionally, goat milk & cow milk are similar. Goat milk is higher in some vitamins and minerals, cow’s milk has more folic acid and B12 than goat milk. This doesn’t matter much for formula though, because all formulas are fortified so they include the right balance of vitamins & minerals to mimic breast milk. Some studies suggest that the nutrients in goat’s milk are easier to absorb than cow’s milk, which might give goat’s milk a slight benefit over cow’s milk formulas.

#2: Tolerability. Goat milk is often said to be an ‘hypoallergenic’ alternative to cow’s milk because many families report that it’s less likely to be troublesome for their babies who are sensitive to cow’s milk proteins. Additionally:

  • Goat milk doesn’t contain the type of casein protein, alpha-S1, that can be problematic in cow milk – which gives it a leg up here.
  • Goat milk protein generally forms a smaller, softer, and looser curd in the gut than cow milk (which makes it
gentler). And, goat milk protein curds are broken down (degraded) faster than those from cow milk protein.
  • This makes goat milk naturally easier to digest and, for some children, better tolerated!
  • Note: If your baby has a diagnosed dairy allergy (confirmed cow milk protein allergy), goat milk may trigger an allergic reaction in the same way that cow’s milk would!

Given all of these factors, goat milk formula can be a good option for babies who are having trouble digesting cow’s milk formula.

Would you prefer to avoid starch? (Most Stage 1 formulas are starch free)

Starch_lead

Starch is often times not used in stage 1 formulas, however, for some speciality formula's like Hypoallergenic, starch may be used to make the formula "heavier".  During a baby’s first few months of life, ‘spitting up’ or regurgitation is very common. For babies who bring back feeds, research has shown that starch can be added to infant formula to counteract regurgitation and help to prevent the loss of energy and nutrients. Starch emulsifies fats and oils in hypoallergenic formula to make sure that essential fatty acids are evenly distributed.

In stages 2 and beyond, Starch is commonly used to make the formula thicker & more fulfilling for your baby.  This also happens naturally with breastmilk.
