Subject: Unlocking Ecodesign regulation for sustainable products.

 

The ESPR is framework legislation and does not set specific measures; specific measures will be adopted in secondary legislation-delegated acts.

The ESPR Regulation only applies to energy-related products.

The ESPR Regulation applies to any physical good placed on the market or put into service, including components and intermediate products.

The ESPR regulation is built on the Ecodesign directive, and existing measures adopted pursuant to the Ecodesign Directive remain in force until repealed.

The first working plan under the ESPR includes intermediate products such as steel, iron, aluminum, and final products such as textiles, detergents, furniture, paints, lubricants, chemicals, energy-related products, and ICT.

All regulated products under the ESPR must carry a digital product passport, which simplifies digital access to product-specific information related to sustainability, circularity, and legal compliance.

Economic operators must ensure the DPP exists, is complete, reliable, verified, and backed up by a certified third-party product passport provider.

The ESPR sets mandatory criteria for Green Public Procurement (GPP).

The destruction of unsold consumer products, such as apparel and footwear, will be prohibited after 2 years under the ESPR.

Under the ESPR, economic operators discarding unsold products must disclose information such as the number and weight per year, and the reason for destruction on their website per financial year.
