Would you enjoy being around lots of other backpackers or few backpackers?
Other backpackers please! I want some sense of normalcy amidst culture shock.
Few backpackers...not to be too niche but I want the local experience.
If I'm in a city I want other backpackers and if I'm in the country, I don't want to hear a word of English.
I want to be around locals in the city, but it would be refreshing to see other backpackers in the countryside or on the beach.
Do you want to drink lots of alcohol?
Yes!
Nah.
What's your ideal type of transportation?
Train
Bus
Plane
Boat
Life is about unachievable balance. What's your ideal ratio of urban to rural? You can even pick one that seems totally impossible! Remember this is all a vibe assessment.
50% Urban to 50% Rural
70% Urban to 30% Rural
70% Rural to 30% Urban
I want to avoid urban areas.
I want to avoid rural areas.
Scenario: You've been trapped at home for months due to a pandemic. You close your eyes to picture yourself far away, surrounded by nature. In this daydream, where are you?
In the mountains
On the beach
In the jungle
In a city park
In farmlands, but Asian farmlands not Illinois' corn hell.
Countries and regions all have their own pace at which they live, hence the term "island time" to describe living at a slower pace or "New York minute" to describe NYC's rushed population moving so quickly they shave two seconds off of a minute and therefore gain 50 additional minutes in which to be productive that day. This question is not about how you want to live your life, but rather what speed of lifestyle you are most interested in immersing yourself in for 10 days to 2 weeks or slightly longer. So, what pace of life do you want to experience in SE Asia?
Chilled. Let's embrace island time even when we aren't on islands. I like having some time to catch my breath, even though I know that means transportation time increases in such regions.
Hurried. I may not join in on their rushing around, but I want to get places quickly, see a lot, and be bombarded with smells and movement. I recognize that this is not very relaxing but I want a crash-course in this new culture!
Even-keeled. This pace feels a lot like home. It's not island time but it's also not New York city. People are efficient, but not rushed. I like the basic pace.
What type of adventure sounds the most fun?
Tubing a river from bar to bar.
Renting a motorbike and riding from town to town.
Partying at one of the most infamous events of the year.
Zip-lining through the jungle.
Taking a food tour through a city.
Food. Every country will have traditional options such as Pad Thai and Pho (even outside of Thailand and Vietnam). How important is the overall food experience to you?
I am here for the food. I'll try some basics but I am all about finding new more unique options that taste AMAZING!
I'm freaked out by some of the food, so I'll stick to Pad Thai and Pho regardless of where we go.
I like food and I'm willing to try something new, but I'm okay going to a country with bad food if that country has some other dope experiences.
What kind of local/cultural experience sounds best to you?
I want full-immersion. I want to live with the locals in a village for a few days.
I'm culturally satisfied by indepently seeing the major sites and eating food from markets.
I don't want to live with the locals, but I'll still dive into a deep level of immersion through a culturally intensive program offered by locals.
I don't want to live with the locals and I don't need the structure of a tour, but I want to experience more than just sightseeing and eating. I'll probably just wander around a city and explore off-the-beaten path locations.
Does the climate bother you at all?
I get that it's grossly humid and hot and will rain a bit during monsoon season. I see it as the full experience and I say bring. it. on.
I know it will be pretty warm and wet wherever we go, but I really want to visit some place that has a milder climate for a few days to keep myself sane.
You're at the beach. How do you spend your time?
I want to spend most of the time laying on the beach or swimming on my own. I'll eat one big meal that day and take a siesta during the afternoon rain.
I like laying on the beach, but I also want to take advantage of ocean activities such as snorkeling, sailing, or paddle-boarding.
I want to be on a beach near a bigger village or town so I can eat as much as I want when I want and have the option to do non-beach activities if I get bored.
I'm looking for more intense ocean activities...a.k.a. surfing
You're going sightseeing. What sites are you looking forward to the most?
Temples and ruins
Mountains and jungles
Modern Asian architecture
Traditional style villages
Waterfalls
How many countries would you like to visit?
I'm honestly okay with spending a long period of time in just one country.
I want to see as many as possible!
I think two is more than enough.
I want a broader experience of three, but I don't want to be rushed.
