There was once a poor woodcutter, working hard in the forest, getting wood to sell for some food. One day, as he was cutting a tree for wood, his Iron axe accidentally fell into the river. The river was very deep and was flowing really fast. He thought he lost his Iron axe forever and would not find it again. He sat at the bank of the river and cried because now he couldn’t sell wood for some food. While he was crying, the God of the River arose and asked him what happened. The woodcutter told him the story. The God of the River offered to help him by looking for his axe. He disappeared into the river and came back with a Gold axe, but the woodcutter said it was not his. He disappeared again and came back with a Silver axe, but the woodcutter said that was not his either. The God disappeared into the water again and came back with an Iron axe, the woodcutter smiled happily and said it was his. The God was very happy with the woodcutter’s honesty and gifted him both the golden and silver axes along with the iron axe. When he told his neighbour about what happened, the neighbour went to the river with an iron axe and threw into the river. Once again the God of the river appeared and asked him what happened, the neighbour lied and told him that he accidentally dropped his axe into the river. When the God came up with a Gold axe the neighbour immediately said it was his. The God knew he was lying and punished by not giving him anything.
