FAA-D-2494, TECHNICAL INSTRUCTION BOOK MANUSCRIPTS: ELECTRONIC, ELECTRICAL, AND MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT, REQUIREMENTS FOR PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPT AND PRODUCTION OF BOOKS

This FAA specification sets forth the requirements for the preparation of maintenance handbooks for new or contractor-modified equipment.

In multivolume manuscripts, volume 1 shall contain a complete table listing the contents of all volumes; other volumes shall contain a table listing only the contents of the volume in which the list appears.

The information in the Technical Description section is sufficient to enable a complete understanding of how the equipment works and references diagrams and drawings within this section.

The Maintenance Procedures section includes performance checks and recurring maintenance tasks that are designed to forestall equipment breakdown.

The Parts List section identifies and describes each part and provides all necessary part numbers and source data required.

Warnings, Cautions and Notes should be short and concise and used to emphasize important and critical instructions.

Tables can be used to present a variety of information, some of these include: • Performance Checks • Procedures for preventive and corrective maintenance, alignment, and calibration • Listing of performance standards and operating tolerances

Each instruction book is designated by a particular TI publication number and will be typed in the upper outside corner of each page.

The General paragraph includes information and procedures necessary to place the equipment into operation and to maintain or change that operation as required.

A Performance check is a test, measurement, or observation of abnormal operating controls and functions to determine whether a system, subsystem, or equipment is operating within its established tolerance.
