Tracheostomy In-Service

Tracheostomy is only performed if there is an obstruction at or above the level of the larynx.

When a tracheostomy is performed, there is a loss of the normal humidification and filtering of inhaled air.

The obturator is used only when inserting a trach tube during a trach tube change.

Secretions tend to stick to plastic trach tubes more than to the metal trach tubes.

The cuffed trach tube needs to be deflated during and 30 minutes after feeding to restore the passage of air between the upper and lower airways.

The artificial nose provides humidification and is best for patients who don't need oxygen therapy.

To thin tracheal secretions, instill normal saline drops before suctioning.

A child that seems restless or looks scared for no apparent reason may be in respiratory distress.

If a child has a lot of tracheal secretions, application of baby oil or lotion to the stoma will prevent skin breakdown.

It is best to change the trach tube when there is another person to assist.
