In Zeeland ligt een estuarium. Dit is een trechtervormige monding van een rivier wat zich mengt met de Noordzee. Hoe is dit estuarium ontstaan?
In de ijstijd kwam er ijs op Zeeland liggen. Dit ijs sneed zich in de grond, waardoor er geulen ontstonden. Deze geulen liepen vol met water.
Door het smelten van ijs na de ijstijden steeg de zeespiegel, waardoor de Nederlandse kustlijn verschoof. Het water stroomde naar de laaggelegen gebieden.
De rivier de Schelde heeft zich steeds dieper in het landschap gesneden. De Schelde werd steeds breder, doordat de randen ook wegsleten.
De rivier de schelde nam materiaal met zich mee door de stroming. Dit materiaal bouwde zich onderaan de rivier op, doordat het hier vlak is.
Deltawerken zijn een verdedigingssysteem in het estuarium van Zeeland tegen het hoogwater vanuit de zee. Waar of niet waar?
