MSc Research Project - Colour Ring Identification Quiz

Colour rings are used in ornithology to identify individual birds, providing insights into population dynamics and conservation strategies. Successful identification of colours can prove difficult in the field.

 

My project is looking at the effect of distance and image manipulation on the successful identification of colour rings using photographs taken through a telescope. 

 

Before looking at the photographs, please answer the next two questions, which may have an influence on the quiz results.

 

Have you had any experience in identifying birds using colour rings?

 

 

In this quiz you will be shown pictures of colour rings. The different colours are shown in the photograph in the following order, from left to right:

 

Blue

Green

Orange

Red

White

Light Blue

Lime

 

Take a moment to familiarise yourself with the colours.

 

You will be shown a series of 45 photographs in which there are two colour rings on a vertical post. You will have up to 15 seconds to select which colour you think the top and bottom colour rings are in each picture. You will need to select one colour from the left column for the top ring, and one colour from the right column for the bottom ring. You can press 'Next' to go on to the next photograph, or if you run out of time it will move on automatically.  

 

On the next page is an example question to get you used to the format.

 

 

Each question from this point has a 15 second timer, visible at the bottom right of the answer options. You will not be able to pause the quiz until it is finished.
