We use formalin prepared in our lab
We prefer to use a alcohol fixative
Fixation of large (resection) specimens
Large specimens are placed in fixative whole and dissected once fixed.
Large specimens are opened immediately they are received in the lab
Fixation times
We do not monitor fixation times in our lab
Biopsy specimens are fixed for a minimum of 2 hours before processing
Biopsy specimens are fixed for a minimum of 4 hours before processing
Fixative recycling
We always fresh fixative
We use recycled fixative (ie formalin)
Tissue Processing - dehydration step
We use isopropanol
We use denatured alcohol
We use ethanol
I am not sure what sort of dehydration fluid we useid
Tissue Processing - clearing
We use a tissue processor that does not require the use of a clearing agent
We use xylene
We use toluene
I am not sure what clearing agent we use.
Recycling processing reagents
We always use new reagents and do not recycle any reagents
We use recycled clearing agent (ie xylene)
We use recycled alcohol
We use recycled alcohol and xyelene
Tissue Processing - wax
We use a wax specially formulated for use in histotechnology
We use a wax made available to us locally
