Since it was established in 2001, the annual Homeless World Cup tournament has sought to use football as a medium through which homeless people of both genders can change their lives for the better. By playing for their country, being part of a team and enjoying a sense of belonging, participants can improve their self-esteem, something that they can use to change their situation.

This is certainly borne out in practice. Since taking part, over 70 per cent of players have gained regular employment, improved their housing situation or chosen to develop their education. Several have even gone on to make their living partly from football as coaches or players with professional and semi-professional teams.

One such success story is David Duke, who represented Scotland in 2004 and returned to the 2006 tournament in Cape Town as the team coach. Whereas he was homeless before, he now has his own home. Has taken a course in community development and is a qualified football coach.

In 2006, teams from over 40 countries took part in the tournament, which took place in South Africa for a week from 23 September.

The 2005 tournament drew total crowds of over 50,000 and significant media publicity by using the limitless International appetite for football. As a result, the Homeless World Cup not only encourages homeless people to participate, it also attracts the attention of the public, giving them an education into issues surrounding homelessness and letting them witness people working hard to change their lives for the better

For many years, the wealthy and academically bright chose to attend one of the prestigious universities in Britain or America if they wanted to get overseas degree. Internationally recognized colleges such as Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard and Yale attracted such ambitious undergraduates.

However, with more difficult visa application processes and higher tuition fees in the UK and USA this situation has changed, with universities in a number of countries now competing for international students. Tertiary institutions in New Zealand, South Africa, and even non-English speaking countries like Singapore, the Netherlands and Japan, now make considerable investments in attracting overseas enrollments.

In the Netherlands, over half of its master's level courses are now taught in English. Some Japanese universities have also started to offer programs with English as the language of instruction to help attract non-native students.
