Lunch is over! Where do you go on the playground?
The mulch near the bench where the teachers sit. There's a little tension, something is awkward about the situation, but there's a strange charm too, the sun shining and other people running past you, yelling joyfully
The edges of the gardens by the baseball field. Are they overgrown or dead? It doesn't matter. The sky is a little overcast, pale gray clouds overhead giving the world a dreamlike feeling. You can hear voices in the distance, hazy and indistinct. There are closer ones too, but they're only clear in bits and pieces
In a tower overlooking the rest of the playground. It's made of plastic and metal and youth. The sounds of the playground are indistinct and all-encompassing. Through the noise, voices break through like songs through static
To the asphalt court that you need to cross over to get to the playground. It's inert and harsh in the winter and fall, but in the brief moment of summer the earth boils and burns. You're removed from the ones running and screaming and dreaming
Beneath a tree at the edge of the playground, the leaves and branches casting intricate shadows dotted with sunlight. You don't care about the other kids in the playground, the ones that matter are with you in your mottled world
Alright, who are you looking for there?
Someone like a lighthouse, that you can always go back to no matter how stormy the sea gets
A true friend, someone you can be happy and content and carefree with
Anyone, really. You don't know who you're looking for, but you want desperately to find out
You aren't really looking for anyone in particular, you don't think. But you could be wrong
Something new, something that will transform you forever and be everything you've ever wanted
You and I both know that we don't always get what we want. Who do you actually find?
You find someone that equal parts repels you and draws you in. Like a scar that won't quite close, a faint ache that never goes away
You find someone that brings out a part of you that you didn't know existed, that maybe didn't exist before this. no. Of course it did. It always did, and you don't know it yet, but it always will
You find someone that understands, but you don't know quite yet how deep this understanding truly is
You find someone unexpected, who you don't know if you belong with. But you have to try, right? You have to try
You find someone that brings out the best in you, but the best of you still wants for more. Be patient
Well, whoever you've found has a question for you. What's your favorite color?
The sky is clear and the sea is still. And you're crying and you don't know why
You're falling but the snow cushions your landing. You're laughing now, playing. But it's still cold
You're locked away in a tower, and the briars are starting to look more appealing than the mossy stone
You close your eyes, and you don't know what you're looking at. But it's bright like a flashlight against skin
You're looking at the trees, and it's autumn and the leaves are changing and you're waiting for them to fall
You wake up. That was was the past, and you can't go back to the past. sorry.
I have mixed feelings about the past. but I think it's for the best that I left it behind. well, left it behind as best I could.
Things were different in the past. Louder and brighter and wilder. I'm still deciding if that was a good thing
I think I don't need to go back. I think the past is everywhere, in everything I do, for better or worse
I prefer now. The past is the past for a reason
I will never escape the past. I don't know if I want to try
You might be barred from the past, but everywhere else is fair game. Where do you go?
Wherever is safest, wherever I can't be hurt, where I can hide from the cruelty this world has to offer
I go wherever my heart takes me. It hasn't led me astray yet.
I follow a map, some kind of plan. And if that fails, i'll make my own
I stay where I am. There are ways to find wonder in the ordinary, and I intend to discover all of them
Anywhere but here
Wherever you are, you look around. What do you see?
A sprawling network of canyons, as though a thousand ancient rivers carved the earth into ribbons. There are chittering voices from their depths. They whisper secrets you told long ago
Your breath misting in front of you, the sprawling landscape of a world full of wonder, the ground beneath your feet at the mountain's peak
Something out of a fairytale. Your dreams from when you were young, of dragons and magic and happy endings
A web of metal walls inlaid with pulsing circuits, a maze within a maze within a maze. You're at it's center, and you don't know if that's the beginning or the end
Blazing stars on an ink-black canvas. Stories from eons ago written in the cosmos, unknowable and yet somehow known
This place you've seen has a monarch, a sovereign, an artificer of it and all it contains. What does this false god look like?
It's a suit of armor, a rusted sword in it's hand. A helm covering it's face, if it has one
A glass bird with a steel cage where it's heart should be. The cage is empty for now.
A gust of wind, the faintest scent of roses, a glimmer of sunlight. You don't know what you would see if you looked at it.
A gaping maw, as though the air itself was split open and given an insatiable hunger. There is nothing beyond it's gleaming teeth, and it's howls are silent
A shambling thing of sharp edges and torn pages. It hovers off the ground, looking almost kind, almost peaceful.
The creature challenges you to a duel, allowing you to choose a weapon with which to fight it. What do you pick?
A solid gold shield that hides deadly spikes with it's shine. I'm not a fighter, but I won't go down without one
Nothing. I wish to make peace. But if peace isn't enough, my hands are as dangerous as any weapon
A pen. It's mightier than the sword, after all. Both blood and ink shall be spilled
I won't try to fight. I'll run and keep running until my foe is gone, and even then i'll never stop
My conviction. I won't lose, I can't. But my conviction strays easily into rage.
Your adversary is vanquished, and you stand victorious, your journey over.
Finally. I'm out of danger
Finally. I've won
Finally. I've shown my strength
Finally. I'm ready to move on
Finally. I need to rest
