1. You are playing in a stroke-play event. You tee off one foot in front of the tee-markers on a 400-yard hole. You take five strokes to complete the hole. You tee off on the next hole. You get a two-stroke penalty for teeing off from a wrong place, so your score for the hole is 7.

2. You are playing in a match-play event. Your opponent gets a 4 on the hole and you are putting for a 4. Your ball comes to rest overhanging the hole. Before you can get to the hole your opponent lifts your ball and concedes your next stroke. Because your opponent deliberately lifted your ball before the 10-second waiting time had ended, your opponent loses the hole.

3. You are playing in a stroke-play event in a group with two other players. Player number one is walking down the fairway and accidentally kicks your ball. Player number two picks up your ball and replaces it on the spot from which it was kicked. You then play your ball. You get a one-stroke penalty because your ball was replaced by someone not allowed to replace it.

4. Your ball comes to rest in a red penalty area and your ball is up against a cactus. You decide to treat your ball as unplayable and drop it and play it from the penalty area, within two club-lengths of where the ball lies, no nearer the hole. You play the ball onto the putting green. You get three penalty strokes.

5. Your tee shot comes to rest in a wooded area. You pick up a ball, believing it is a stray ball, but discover it is your ball in play. You then decide to take penalty relief and return to the teeing area to play under penalty of stroke-and-distance under Rule 18.1. You are allowed to proceed in this fashion and will be playing your third shot from the teeing area.

6. You are playing in the stroke-play club championship. Your dad is your caddie. On the 16th hole your mom shows up in a golf cart and sees that your dad is getting tired carrying your bag. Your dad gets into the cart with your clubs. Your mom then drives the cart and this routine is continued on the 17th and 18th holes. You get 6 penalty strokes for having more than one caddie on holes 16, 17 and 18.

7. Your ball comes to rest on a cart path. You lift your ball to take free relief and you see that your ball has a scuff mark on it. You get a second ball from your bag, you find your nearest point of complete relief and drop the second ball in the one club-length relief area under Rule 16.1. Your second ball rolls out of the relief area, and into a nearby bunker. You know that Rule 14.3c requires you to drop again because your ball came to rest outside the relief area. Not wanting to retrieve the second ball from the bunker, you get a third ball from your bag and drop it in the relief area from which it is played. You get no penalty for the first substitution because your ball was “scuffed”. However, you get a one-stroke penalty for the second substitution because such substitution was not allowed.
