Rock Cycle

What is the rock cycle
An idealized cycle of processes undergone by rocks in the earth's crust, involving igneous intrusion, uplift, erosion, transportation, deposition as sedimentary rock, metamorphism, remelting, and further igneous intrusion.

What is a sedimentary rock?
A sedimentary rock is one that is formed by the accumulation of small to large sediment particles and undergoes compaction, cementation or evaporation from a saturated mineral solution.
Sedimentary rock is classified as organic, (derived from organisms), clastic (formed from any size particle of pre-existing rock), or non-clastic (also referred to as chemical), where the sedimentary rock is formed from the evaporation of a solution that is saturated with mineral compounds.
Made from volcanos
Made by erosion
What is a metamorphic rock?
Metamorphic rocks arise from the transformation of existing rock types, in a process called metamorphism, which means "change in form". The original rock (protolith) is subjected to heat (temperatures greater than 150 to 200 °C) and pressure (1500 bars), causing profound physical and/or chemical change. The protolith may be a sedimentary rock, an igneous rock or another older metamorphic rock.

How are metamorphic rocks classified?
Based on texture, metamorphic rock can be classified as foliated or non-foliated: 1. Foliated metamorphic rock such as gneiss display banding and regrouping of its mineral constituents as a result of enormous pressures and heat. The banding forms perpendicularly to the direction of pressure.

How do metamorphic rocks occur?
The word Metamorphism comes from the Greek: Meta = change, Morph = form, so metamorphism means to change form. In geology this refers to the changes in mineral assemblage and texture that result from subjecting a rock to pressures and temperatures different from those under which the rock originally formed.

What is a igneous rock?
An igneous rock is one formed from the cooling and solidification of magma or lava. Examples include basalt, rhyolite, pumice, scoria, granite, diorite, gabbro, and obsidian. …Magma solidifying under the surface results in coarser grained intrusive igneous rock.
Heat
Igneous rock. Igneous rock is one of the three main rock types, the others being sedimentary and metamorphic rock. Igneous rocks are rocks formed from molten magma. The material is made liquid by the heat inside the Earth's mantle.

What is igneous rock made of?
Tuff is a rock formed from volcanic ash. The upper section of the Earth's crust is made up of around 95% igneous rock. Learn about sedimentary rocks, metamorphic rocks, other rocks and minerals or fossils. Make a fossil cast or check out our rock sorting lesson plan.

What are some facts about igneous rocks?
Igneous rock is formed when magma cools and solidifies, it may do this above or below the Earth's surface.
Magma can be forced into rocks, blown out in volcanic explosions or forced to the surface as lava.
Examples of igneous rocks include basalt, granite, pumice, obsidian, tuff, diorite, gabbro and andesite
