Opinion Phase:

What previous experience have you had with the main idea?
Which answers best respond to the following question: (You can select more than one)

->Do you believe the main idea was effectively communicated? Why or Why not.
Yes, I do not believe the main idea was effectively communicated. The opening lines also lure the reader into a false sense of security—they put a sweet, simple face on what will later turn out to be a psychologically troubling poem. That is, the fairy tale beginning sets up the expectation of a fairy tale ending that fails to arrive—there is no "happily ever after" here, and the contrast between this opening and the lines to come highlights the sense of ongoing grief that colors the entire poem.
Yes, I do not believe the main idea was effectively communicated. The poem sounds like a fairy tale and gives the reader a feeling of all that is good and happy. But underneath this joyful tone is a tone more ominous, and Poe uses certain words and phrases that give this eerie feeling. Partway through the poem, the readers begin to understand that this is not a common fairy tale. Rather, this is a dark and terrifying story of love being vulnerable to death.
Which answers best respond to the following question: (You can select more than one)

-> Do you agree with the main idea, why or why not?
Yes, I do agree with the poem’s main idea. Love is not invulnerable to death, as love cannot keep someone alive. If you love someone who has cancer, for instance, that love cannot save them. Sure, you can still love them after death, but it will not make them immortal.
No, I do not agree with the poem’s main idea. If love is not invulnerable to death, then why does the speaker continue to remain “in love” even after Annabel Lee is dead and gone? Clearly, her death did not end his love for her. The poet loves Annabel even in death, and will always love her.
If you were giving this poem for someone else to read, which strategies would you recommend they use to better understand the poem’s main idea? (you may choose more than one)
