Take a moment to settle into where you are right now. Place one hand on your chest, and one hand on your belly, right above your belly button. On your next inhale, fill all the way up with air and take note of how your body moves. Exhale. Continue with a few more rounds of breath. Consider: which description most accurately captures your experience of breathing?
The hand on my chest moves, but the hand on my belly does not. I feel as though my spine lengthens upward on my inhale and downward when I exhale. I can feel my neck, and shoulders engage when I inhale and release when I exhale.
Both the hand on my chest and the hand on my belly move when I breathe. I can feel my neck and shoulders moving when I inhale, and my belly expands outward. On my exhale my belly pulls inward and my neck, chest and shoulders release.
My neck, chest, and shoulders do not move at all when I breathe. The hand on my belly moves outward when I inhale and I can feel the middle of my body expanding in every direction. On my exhale my belly pulls inward, towards my spine. I do not feel my spine lengthen as I breathe.
The hand on my belly pulls inward when I inhale, and relaxes outward when I exhale. I can feel my spine lengthening, and becoming taller with my inhale, and releasing back down with my exhale.
