What is cloning?
When an organism is replicated in a lab.
A special gadget that replicates organisms.
A type of asexual reproduction where the new organism buds off of the parent.
A type of organism that performs asexual reproduction.
Which ones are types of asexual reproduction?
Fertilization
Fission
Mitotic Division
Budding
Cloning
Plant Cutting
Partial Regeneration
True Regeneration
Mitosis
Meiosis
What is fission?
When an organism, like bacteria, splits in two.
When a single-celled, eukaryotic organism splits.
What are fission's benefits?
Can be done quickly.
Can be done with all organisms.
What are fission's disadvantages?
Only works with small organisms.
Over half of the organisms reproduced end up dying.
What is mitotic division?
When a single celled, eukaryotic organism performs mitosis and splits, resulting in an identical organism.
When a cell goes through the process of mitosis.
What is budding?
When an identical copy of an organism grows off the side of the parent and eventually falls off.
When a flower buds.
What is plant cutting?
When a plant's cuttings are planted, they sprout into their own plants.
When a gardner trims a tree or bush.
What is partial regeneration?
When an organism loses a part, it can grow it back.
When an organism is broken apart, each of its parts grows what it is missing.
What is true regeneration?
When an organism loses a part, it can grow it back.
When an organism is broken apart, each of its parts grows what it is missing.
What is asexual reproduction?
Reproduction occurring without the egg and sperm meeting.
Reproduction occurring when an egg and sperm meet.
True or false? The offspring produced during asexual reproduction is identical.
True
False
How is cloning in animals done?
When animals are cloned, it is done in a lab. A scientist takes the genetic information from the animal they want to clone. Then, they take an egg of the same species with the haploid part removed. They fuse the two cells together. It acts as a complete zygote and grows into an embryo. This is now implanted in a female. A new animal, identical to the original, grows.
An egg and sperm are removed from a male and female of the same species. The two cells are fused together, and are put in a nutritious liquid in a warm environment for several months. The complete zygote is then put back into a female, and the female gives birth to a clone of the original animal.
What are the advantages of asexual reproduction?
Doesn't require a mate.
Takes less time.
Most of the time, the offspring stay alive.
What are the disadvantages of asexual reproduction?
Allows for no genetic change.
Mutations can easily happen.
Requires both the egg and sperm to be at the same place, at the same time.
Takes a long time.
Animal reproductive organs are called:
Gonads
Testes
Ovaries
Male reproductive organs are called:
Gonads
Testes
Ovaries
Female reproductive organs are called:
Gonads
Testes
Ovaries
