(1) Deep in the heart of Central Asia lies one of the most unique bodies of water in the world—the Aral Sea. Although it is called a sea, it is actually an inland lake. The Aral Sea was once the fourth largest lake in the world. But that is not true anymore. Since 1960, this body of water has lost 90 percent of its volume. This has happened because the governments in surrounding countries have used water from the two rivers that provide water into the Aral Sea to irrigate the deserts of Central Asia. The water turned desert lands into fields where cotton and other crops grew.

(2) However, irrigating with water from the rivers reduced the amount of water flowing into the Aral Sea. Fertilizers and pesticides from the surrounding fields leaked into the Aral Sea as well. The reduction and pollution of the Aral Sea had a severe impact on the lives of thousands of people who lived around the lake. They had been relying on the lake for hundreds of years as a supply of food and water. Fish disappeared from the lake. There was a shortage of drinking water. As the winds picked up chemicals from the dried-out soil, the air became polluted. As a result the region experienced a sharp increase in lung disease and cancer.

(3) In recent years, people have started to take action to save the Aral Sea, and hopefully restore it. In 2005, engineers completed the Kokoral Dam. The dam was built to capture freshwater from one of the rivers, and allows it to flow into the Aral Sea. The water from the river has started to restore the quality of water in the lake. The Aral Sea could be further improved by also building a dam on the second river that used to supply the lake. However, building the dams would reduce the amount of water that can be used for irrigation. Farmers in several countries need the water from the rivers for their crops.

All of the following describe possible perspectives on the Kokoral Dam EXCEPT:

Fishermen are most likely against the Kokoral Dam because it will bring water and fish back to the Aral Sea.
Farmers are most likely against the Kokoral Dam because it takes water away from irrigation projects.
Engineers are most likely for the Kokoral Dam because it provided them with a new design project to work on.
Residents of the area are most likely for the Kokoral Dam because it brings more drinking water to the area.

One reason why governments in Central Asia began to use rivers for irrigation is because the nearby deserts—
Had wide stretches of flat land where it is easy to practice agriculture.
Were where a body of water and land meet so getting water is easy for farms.
Received very little precipitation and led to difficulty growing crops there.
Were surrounded by water on all sides making irrigation unnecessary.
In the photo above, farmer Pedro Figueroa ________________ a cotton field in Yuma, Arizona. Seven states depend on water from the Colorado River, and a debate is happening over the future of water rights for farmers, citizens, and businesses.
