What Type of a Parent Are You?

Question One: You find a package of cigarettes in your 13 year old son’s room. You:

Yell at him and punish him before hearing his explanation.

Sit down and talk with him about the effects and harms of smoking cigarettes. You punish him accordingly.

Don’t say anything. You probably shouldn’t have been snooping in his room.

Question Two: Your toddler wakes up from a nightmare and and wants to sleep with you. You:

Tell her to go back to bed, and that it was just a dream.

Bring her back to bed and read her a book until she falls back asleep.

Let her sleep in bed with you.

Question Three: Your favourite television show comes on at 9pm. You have your 6 year old son in bed by 8pm every night. Right before you show, he gets up and says he can’t sleep and wants to watch it with you. You:

Say “too bad”, and tell him to go back to bed. He shouldn’t be bothering you.

Bring him back to bed and count sheep until he falls back asleep. You’ve missed the first fifteen minutes, but at least your son is sleeping now.

Let him watch the show with you, and bring him to bed after it’s over.

Question Four: You get a phone call to pick your 10 year old son up at school. He is suspended for hitting another boy at recess. After you bring him home, you:

Hit him back. You had to leave work for this, and he should know how it feels.

Sit down with him and ask what happened. Discipline him accordingly, and make sure he apologizes to the other boy.

Tell him it was fine. The other kid probably made him mad, anyways.

Question Five: Your 6 year old child throws a loud fit in the grocery store because you wouldn’t but them candy. You:

Tell them to quit their behaviour, or they would be in big trouble.

Put it in the cart, but sneak it out at the checkout. If they hadn’t acted out so loudly and dramatically, they would’ve gotten it.

Buy the candy for them.
