ROM is short for
Read Only Memory which requires very little power to run, and usually holds semi-permanent important data that cannot be lost when device is powered off.
 
RAM is
Random Access Memories, a high-speed memory. When you load a program, or open a document, that program or document is read from your hard drive and stored in RAM so your CPU can execute the program's instructions, or manipulate the document, very quickly.
