Slavery, not state's rights. Even if it were about state's right, it is the means of buying and selling people which is fucking wrong and no one should be allowed to do at all. Those who scream state rights are idiots. It was always about slavery. They even said it was.

It can be both state rights and slavery. Some could argue the Union wanted full control of the country and to squash and independence of the southern states. However, the south was explicit in wanting to keep their vast wealth and that was largely due to slavery.
