A country’s currency has only two coins – 5p and 6p. I have lots of both types of coins. This means the smallest total I can make with my coins is 5p (one 5p coin) – I can’t make a total of 1p, 2p, 3p etc. So if 1p is the smallest total I CAN’T make with my coins, what’s the largest total I CAN’T make?
A woman is selecting from three men for a job in her team. She tells them that she has five hats – three white and two green. She explains that she’ll secretly put one hat on each of their heads, such that they won’t know their own hat’s colour. She says they’ll only be able to see the hats on the other two men’s heads, and also explains they won’t be able to see the two hats she doesn’t use. She ends by saying that the first man to correctly identify his hat’s colour will get the job. Man #1 looks at #2’s hat and #3’s hat, and says he doesn’t know his own hat’s colour. Then, Man #2 looks at #1’s hat and #3’s hat, and says he doesn’t know either. But Man #3 – who’s blind, so can’t see either of the other two men’s hats – says “In that case, I know my hat’s colour.” What colour was the blind man’s hat? And what logic did he use, so he knew he was definitely right?
– because: • There are two green hats. So if someone sees two greens, they know their hat is white. If someone sees two whites – or they see one white and one green – their hat could be either colour • Man #1 didn’t see two green hats, or he’d have known his was white • Man #2 also didn’t see two greens • But Man #2 also knew that Man #1 hadn’t seen two green hats. Therefore, Man #2 knew that, if Man #3 is wearing green, that’d mean he (Man #2) would have to be wearing white – since he knew Man #1 hadn’t seen two green • But Man #2 didn’t know this. Which means Man #3 couldn’t have been wearing a green hat • Meaning that Man #3 must have been white
