St.Petersburg once used to be the capital city of Russia. Then Lenin changed it to be Moscow in 1918. Sir Vladimir Lenin led the Russian revolution and seized control of the government. He set up a communist state government. Communist state is a government that controls the economy & society as a whole.
Stalin was a czar, or a Russian emperor, he ruled in 1924-1954. The government controlled farms and factories. People opposed Stalin would be taken to a prison/gulag in Siberia or would be killed. Not a person you want to mess with. When Lenin died in 1924, Stalin got the job and took over. 1941, Nazi Germany invaded USSR/ Union of Soviet Socialist republic. After WWII, Great patriotic war, Stalin sent troops to the rest of soviet Union. He did this for 2 reasons.
