On October 22, 1979, the bust was stolen and relocated to a tree stump on the 8th hole of the Florida Avenue University Golf Course. A note delivered to the Daily Illini spoke on behalf of the former President, saying "Went out for a breath of fresh air. It took the combined efforts of the Women's League and the Men's Illinois Union to convince the president to build a new student center. After a president change and delays thanks to the Great Depression, the students got their Union!

Home to concerts, Broadway shows, and most importantly, Fighting Illini basketball, this massive dome encompasses State Farm Center. Built in 1963, State Farm Center has nearly 15,500 permanent seats. The roof is supported by 614 miles of one-quarter inch steel wire wrapped at the base of the dome under intensive pressure.

The gateway was originally constructed in front of the New Main University Hall (where the modern day Illini Union stands). After some time in storage and a large restoration and moving effort, Hallene Gateway stands again, declaring the University motto: Learning and Labor.
