What kind of researcher are you?

When given a research assignment what do you do?

I come up with a set of questions that I might want to work on and then I get started.

I come up with a few ideas that sound interesting and then put it aside until it gets closer to the due date.

I ask people from my class what they are going to do and then try to figure out what my topic should be.

I draft a set of research questions and map out a step-by-step plan for how I will get it done.

When I have a plan and am following it.

When I’m with a group of people and can talk through ideas.

When I’m on my own trying different approaches to different problems.

When the paper is almost due. I need the pressure of a deadline.

What do you do when you hit a snag during your research process?

I just work with whatever I have especially since I probably don’t have a lot of time left to get it done.

I go back through my notes to see what I can adjust so that I can keep going.

I keep trying different things until I get unstuck.

I ask my friends or family for help. If that doesn’t work, I ask my professor for help.

When doing research, I'm happiest when…

I’m working with a group of people in a place where we can all talk and ask questions.

I’m figuring out problems on my own.

I can see myself progressing through my research map.

You’ve been selected to be a part of a team that is researching how to build houses on Mars. Which role best fits you?

Group planner – I’ll give everyone their assignments so that we all know our tasks and due dates.

I’d like to be the person that thinks about what the houses would look like.

I’ll work on my own to find resources to help guide our group’s building choices.

I’ll set up times that our group can all work together and eat pizza and brainstorm ideas.
