What is a Lectern?

This is where the bible is kept. Members of the congregation will step up to the stand and read passages of the bible during the service. This can be made of wood, a plain stand or could be in the shape of an egale with spread wings.

A basin , traditionally made of stone. It holds holy water for baptism. Found at the back of the church, usually by the door to symbolise the welcoming of the baby to church.

What is being described? A table placed at the east end of the church. Somethimes decorated with a cloth and candles. Made of wood, older ones were made of stone.

From the Latin 'calix' meaning cup and is a goblet used to contain the wine of the Holy Communion. Made in a variety of precious metals mainly gold and silver. In the past they have been made of onyx, horn, clay and glass.

A locked box placed on the Alter under the Cross in which the bread is kept for distribution to the sick. A white Sanctuary Lamp burns over the Tabernacle to draw attention to the reserved sacrament.

What is a Thurible?

This is a metal censer suspended from a chain which is used to burn incense during certain services. It is swung to release incense. The alter server who carries and uses this artifact is called the Thurnifer.
