NDT Audience Quiz:
What type of theatregoer are you?

Working with some academics, we've designed this quiz as part of a piece of research to better understand our audiences. We've tried to make it FUN (sorry) - but at least it's not the same as every other audience survey and we're not asking for any personal or demographic information.

Quiz length: 5-10mins.

If you had to pick one option, what's the most important motivation for you going to the theatre?
Engaging with important social and political issues
Seeing great theatre, major classics and impressive productions
Seeing your favourite artists on stage
Seeing innovative and experimental performance that excites and surprises you
Supporting new work and the future of the arts
For a fun time with friends (ideally with a great bar)
When booking a ticket, what's likely to be the final deciding factor?
You've heard the show is a unique opportunity, genuinely different from anything else
You've read rave reviews in mainstream press
You know the company or some of the people involved in the show are brilliant
The content and themes of the piece feel urgent
Tickets are available - you just want another night out at the theatre
Your friends are going - so it'll be fun to join them
Select your favourite quote, or the one you to which you relate the most.
€Theatre was created to tell people the truth about life and the social situation.” -- Stella Adler
€I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.” -- Oscar Wilde
€The theatre is so endlessly fascinating because it's so accidental.” -- Arthur Miller
€The novel is more of a whisper, whereas the stage is a shout.” -- Robert Holman
€I am confused by life, and I feel safe within the confines of theatre.” -- Helen Hayes
€A stage space has two rules: (1) Anything can happen and (2) Something must happen.” -- Peter Brook
You decide to plan an evening at the theatre, how do you prepare for it?
You already know what you want as you have been following your favourite artists on social media
You read a lot of reviews and pick what looks best
You look for shows relevant to your life and subject interests
You go straight to New Diorama's website and just book - done!
Planning? What plan?
You ask what your friends are doing and tag along
What would make you book tickets earlier in advance for a new show?
More video and photography so you have a better sense of the show in advance
Information on specific pre/post-show events connected to the themes
Knowing that the venue is regularly selling out tickets
I'll always book early if it's for an artist I care about
Nothing, I'll always wait to hear if other people think it's worth the money
Better group booking deals so I can get friends together
How important is it for you to attend cultural events?
Home TV channels are so good these days, I only occasionally feel the need to attend live events
Culture is a great social activity and a way to see friends and family
I'd like to be more culturally involved, but don't find that much to excite me
It's an occasional bonus, but not a core commitment
Creativity is an inherent part of my identity and the joy in my life
Culture is crucial to how I make sense of the world and learn new things
When you think about New Diorama Theatre, you first think:
My local theatre - I live in the area
I love the artists and companies who've been performing there for years
I don’t know much about it, it’s simply a venue among many others
The UK's leading venue for ensemble and company work
A fun venue with a great bar to hang out in
An important venue engaging with current debates
In what ways is supporting the arts important to you?
Somewhat: I do it by buying tickets!
I'm a paying member or supporter of several arts institutions
Money is tight but I donate when I can
I'm most likely to support socially-engaged arts or youth programmes
I support my local venues - charity begins at home
I hate being asked for donations - there are more important causes out there
Which of these New Diorama Theatre productions have you attended? (select all that apply)
Little scratch
