Shippabo - International Shipping Terminology
Air Carrier
Airline that will be physically moving the cargo. For example: American Airlines, Air China, or Polar Air
AMS (Automated Manifest System)
This was created by US Customs to gather shipment information including cargo detail, departure, arrival and release details between ship carriers, air carriers, and rail carriers.
Arrival Date
The date the shipment arrives at the destination port.
Arrival Trucking
The trucking company that will move the shipment from destination port to the warehouse.
Cargo (Freight)
The articles, goods, materials, merchandise, etc that are moved by carriers where a bill of lading is issued by the carrier.
Consignee
A party (usually a buyer of goods) in transportation documents (bill of lading) that ordered the cargo, typically where the cargo will be delivered to unless otherwise instructed. They are the owner of teh cargo for the purpose of filing customs declaration and paying duties and taxes.
Consignor
A party (usually the shipper) in transportation documents (bill of lading) that made/sold the cargo.
Cubic Meter (CBM)
The unit measure for container capacity and is used to measure cargo space and weight.
Customs
Government agency in charge of reviewing entries documents and collecting import or export tax.
Customs Broker
A person or firm that holds knowledge of import and export law and holds a license to submit all documents for clearing cargo through Customs and helps importer pay duties.
Customs Entries
Submission of documents related to shipment for custom review and release.
Delivery Address
The address the shipment is delivered to.
Demurrage
Penalty for exceeding the free time allowed for taking delivery of a shipment from the shipping carrier or warehouse.
Departure Date
The date the shipment is supposed to leave the origin port.
Destination Agent (Freight Forwarder)
A person or company that arranges shipments after it arrives at the destination port.
Freight Forwarders (NVOCC or Agent)
A person or company that arranges shipments for corporations to get goods from the factory or warehouse to customer or final location.
Freight Release Date
The date that freight is released from the party that owns the cargo.
Full Container Load (FCL)
A shipment that takes up the entire container. Container types include: 20', 40', 40'HC and 45'
Harmonize Tariff Code
A list of imported goods and the duty rates that apply to them. This code is needed to submit each product's details to US Customs.
House Bill of Lading (HBL)
A bill of lading issued by the freight forwarder to a shipper as a receipt of goods. This bill will show the shipper as the consignor and the buyer or importer of record as consignee.
House Bill
A house bill allows the transfer of ownership of goods from the shipper to the buyer once released.
Inland Port
Typically this is the second arrival port after landing at the port of arrival.
ISF (Importer Security Filing)
A required filing by US Customs 48hrs prior to shipment departing from origin port. This is to notify US Customs the container detail and arrival plan.
Loose Container Load (LCL)
A shipment that takes less than a container space.
Manufacturer
The party that produced or made the cargo. This is important to know as Customs needs to know the maker of the product.
Master Bill of Lading
A bill of lading issued by the carrier to a freight forwarder as a receipt of goods. This bill will show the origin freight forwarder as the consignor and the destination forwarder as the consignee. A master bill allows the transfer of ownership of goods from the origin freight forwarder to the destination forwarder.
Notify Party
Usually this is the buyer, consignee, or importer on the house bill, however it can be anyone that needs to know the status of shipment. This is the party that must receive the arrival notification.
Release Date
This is the date that the shipment is released. There are two important release dates: master bill release (by origin freight forwarder to destination freight forwarder) and house bill release (by shipper to buyer).
Origin Agent
A person or company that arranges shipments at the origin port.
Port of Arrival (POA)
The ocean destination port.
Port of Departure (POD)
The ocean port that the shipment is leaving from.
Ready By
The date the shipment is ready.
Service Type
The service the shipper or buyer requested from the freight forwarder or Shippabo.
Available Service Types
Available service types are: Port to Port, Port to Door, Door to Port, Door to Door.
Shipper
The party that ships the cargo.
Shipping Carrier
The shipping line or airline that will physically move the cargo; usually the party that issues the master bill.
Transport Type
The service that is requested of a shipping carrier.
Available Transport Service Types
Container Yard to Container Yard (CY CY), Container Yard to Door (CY Door), and Container Freight Station to Container Freight Station (CFS CFS)
Vessel
The name of the vessel that carries the container.
Voyage Number
Typically 3-4 number and text on the vessel.
