Understanding Sexual Harrassment

Most reports involve claims of a "hostile environment" and most charges are brought against co-workers.

There are Federal and State laws that protect employees from sexual harrassment. Employers are obligatedto protect all employees from sexual harrassment.

When a boss or supevisor offers money or special beneftis in exchange for something sexuals, it is called "quid pro quo" harassment. Quid pro quo translates to "something for something" or "this for that".

Crude sexual jokes, whistling at someone, and cat calls are all offesnisve and ARE considered sexual harrassment. These behaviors contribute to "hostile environment" sexual harrassment.

When a client with Dementia makes sexual comments, it is usually considered accidental sexual harrassement.

If you report sexual harrassment complaint to your supervisor, he or she has a legal responsibility to stop the problem and prevent it form happening again in the future.

The first thing you should do if you feel you are the victim of sexual harassment is speak to the offender or have your supervisor speak on your behalf. You should attempt to resolve the issue before filing a formal complaint with EEOC.

For a behaviro to be considered sexual harrassment, it must be both unwelcome and considered offensive by the victim.

Sexual Harrassment should NOT be considered justpart of the job of a healthcare worker. Unwelcome and offensive sexual behavior is NOT okay in any workplace.

The most severe form of sexual harassment is PHYSICAL sexual harassment which includes touching, pinching or rubbing.
