Which summary best suits the poem?
The poem tells the story of a brigade consisting of 600 soldiers who rode on horseback into the “valley of death” for half a league (about one and a half miles). They were obeying a command to charge the enemy forces that had been seizing their guns.
The poem tells the story of a brigade consisting of 600 soldiers who rode on horseback into the Valley of Death for half a league. They were obeying a command to charge the enemy forces. There were not discouraged or fearful by the command, and achieved great glory.
Not a single soldier was discouraged or distressed by the command to charge forward, even though all the soldiers realized that their commander had made a terrible mistake: “Someone had blundered.” The role of the soldier is to obey and “not to make reply...not to reason why,” so they followed orders and rode into the “valley of death.”
600 soldiers were assaulted by the shots of shells of canons in front and on both sides of them. Still, they rode courageously forward toward their own deaths: “Into the jaws of Death / Into the mouth of hell / Rode the six hundred.”
Which of the following is NOT a good example of elaboration:
This poem is an interesting example of a group of people obeying orders no matter what. Many people have a difficult time obeying authority. However, there are times when obedience is imperative, even if one does not agree with a particular decision. Sometimes it is more honorable to be obedient and wrong than to be disobedient and right.
This poem reminds me of a movie I saw, where a group of WWII soldiers had to go back for one of the soldiers from their troop, even though it was practically a death wish to head back after him. But they had their orders and believed that no man should be left behind. Their bravery and loyalty made me think about this poem, since the Light Brigade had to charge into certain death for the sake of duty. They did not care about the risks. They cared about being honorable.
Opinion Phase

What previous experience have you had with the main idea?
Which answers best respond to the following question: (You can select more than one)

->Do you believe the main idea was effectively communicated? Why or Why not.
Yes, the main idea of honor and courage was explicitly communicated by the speaker and stated many times directly.
Yes, the speaker creates poignant picture of a soldier’s dutiful obedience through memorable repetition, rhyme, and powerful images that make the poem emotional.
Which answers best respond to the following question:

(You can select more than one) -> Do you agree with the main idea, why or why not?
No, I do not agree as I believe that there are circumstances in which soldiers should disobey the orders of an authority figure. Humans should not be proud to die, especially if they are being commanded to go into a lost fight. Honor is not everything.
No, I do not agree with the main idea, because I don’t like the idea of soldiers dying for no reason. The men had no reason to die and should not have obeyed these commands. Sometimes, soldiers need to know when they are being asked to do something that is unwise
