I’d include a genuine compliment about something they recently completed.
I’d make sure to point out that they’d earned it over time with hard work.
I’d hint at future opportunities and ways the new role will help them grow.
I’d let them know how proud I am as a mentor and friend.
I’d encourage them to develop their leadership in their new role, even if they don’t have any direct reports.
Your mentee discovers a new system that improves productivity for the whole company. How do you help them present the program to decision makers?
Have them walk me through it. Sometimes we discover ways to improve something by teaching it to someone else.
I’d empower the mentee to bring the system to decision makers on their own.
I’d advocate for my mentee with decision makers beforehand to show them that I have their back.
I’d have them create a step-by-step implementation plan with detailed instructions.
I’d have us work through the process ourselves to test it, and then loop in other team members to test it as well.
Your mentee is asked to take on more responsibility and seems nervous. How do you help them through it?
Discuss exactly how this new responsibility will help them grow.
Offer positive words of encouragement.
Remind them of the reasons for why this new responsibility is necessary and why they specifically were chosen to take it on.
Level with them by pulling from my own experiences—we've all been there!
Reassure them that we're in this as a team. No one will let them fail.
