If you receive an email from an email address you don’t recognise or the email content is a surprise, this maybe a scam. Between 2017-2018, email was one of the top targets for cyber criminals along with social networks and website advertising.

If an email seems suspicious, it probably is. Don't take the risk. Follow these simple steps:

1. Notify the person or business of the fake email, sending a screenshot can help.

3. Delete the email from your account, including your deleted items

4. Download a spam filter on your computer to block future emails from reaching you

In 2019, remote access scams have seen Australian businesses and individuals lose a total of $2,305,998 within 7 months, that's 4,641 reported scams. Don’t be fooled into giving remote access to anyone over the phone, if you are contacted and unsure – hang up.

To avoid future scams, list your number on the Australian Government’s Do Not Call Register.

Passwords are the locks on your front door. Ensure you have strong passwords that consist of at least one uppercase, lowercase, symbol and number. Two factor authentications are that extra layer of defence to the authentication process, making it harder for attackers to access your devices and accounts.

Text messages are a common tactic for scammers and known as SMS Phishing. Watch out for these signs:

Sender is claiming to be from a legitimate company
Create a sense of urgency
Often include no contact details
Contain links to fake websites

It is important to remember to never respond or enter your bank details after clicking on a link in a text message.

If you have fallen victim to a phishing scheme, just know you’re not alone. In June 2019, ACCC (Australian Competition & Consumer Commission) had received 1,577 phishing reports with a total loss of $101,257 via mobile (40%) and email (37%).
